Meet Tommy Crawford - Expert Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus & Statistics Tutor

Tommy Crawford tutors foundational math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus and statistics, along with SAT prep, and he worked as a Mathematics Tutor from 2021 to 2024 in one-on-one and group sessions. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Pure Mathematics from Colorado College, with a concentration in Mathematical Statistics and Number Theory, and is pursuing a Master's in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Design and Manufacturing at George Washington University. He has tutored students from high school through college level, explaining difficult math concepts in simple, easy-to-understand ways. Based in Arlington, Tommy tutors in person in students' homes and at local libraries across Arlington and Alexandria, having each student teach the material back to him so he can see where the holes in their understanding are.

Areas Of Expertise

  • Fundamentals in Math: In college, Tommy learned mathematical principles through rigorous proofs, mastering concepts so he could explain and recreate them using core math principles. He enjoys bringing this approach to his tutoring, helping students understand the "why" behind the math so they build lasting confidence.

  • Algebra: Algebra is second nature to Tommy. He used it daily throughout his bachelor's and master's degree programs to manipulate formulas and solve complex problems. He breaks algebra down into simple, intuitive "tools," equipping his students with a complete toolbox to draw from whenever they hit a roadblock.

  • Geometry: Tommy also tutors geometry, building on the rigorous, proof-based training of his Pure Mathematics degree. He helps students understand why each theorem and formula works, so they can reason through proofs and problems with confidence instead of relying on memorization.

  • Trigonometry: Having tutored numerous students in trigonometry, Tommy prides himself on helping students visualize key concepts. Instead of forcing students to memorize dry definitions, he shows them what is physically happening behind the equations.

  • Calculus: Calculus often seems daunting, but Tommy helps students conquer it with clarity and confidence. Having studied calculus extensively at both Colorado College and The George Washington University, he ensures his students truly grasp the underlying concepts rather than just memorizing procedures.

  • Statistics: Statistics is all about interpreting real-world data. Tommy guides students through both fundamental probability and complex statistical methods, teaching them how to confidently analyze data, apply formulas and draw meaningful conclusions.

  • SAT Prep: Tommy has experience preparing students for the SAT. He addresses gaps in understanding as they come up, so students grow more confident in the material.

  • Grade Levels: Middle school through college. Tommy has tutored students from high school through college level and is comfortable working with middle school students as well.

Teaching Philosophy

"I teach in a way where I introduce the topic and encourage my students to ask questions. I explain the topic in full, then have my students teach the subject back to me while I ask them questions as if this is the first time I'm learning. This allows me to see where the holes are in their understanding and address them as we go, and it also helps them gain confidence in what they are learning. My students enjoy this process and come out better in the end."

What Makes Tommy Special

  • Mathematics Tutor: From 2021 to 2024, Tommy tutored students in calculus, statistics, algebra and foundational mathematics concepts through one-on-one and group sessions. He explains difficult concepts in simple, easy-to-understand ways and adapts his explanations and teaching methods to each student's learning needs, and he learned to teach in multiple different ways in college.

  • Engineering Graduate Studies: Tommy is pursuing a Master's in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Design and Manufacturing at George Washington University. As a Master of Engineering candidate at Tuskegee University, he completed coursework in Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Manufacturing and gained hands-on experience with wind tunnels, hydraulic benches and manufacturing equipment.

  • Data Analyst Intern, Hyper Networks: He developed automation tools that improved analytics workflows and bookkeeping efficiency, and assisted with data extraction, organization and reporting. He also collaborated with teams to turn business needs into data-driven recommendations.

  • Student-Athlete: From 2020 to 2025, Tommy played forward while balancing more than 30 hours a week of athletics, film study, travel and competition with a full academic course load. In those high-performance environments, he demonstrated discipline, teamwork, leadership, perseverance and time management.

  • Communication: Tommy is comfortable using text and email to stay in touch.
