"I have found it useful in the past to first determine how they think about concepts are they a more abstract or more concrete thinker? This allows me to tailor my explanations. For example, if a student were struggling with a math concept because it was too abstract, putting it in more concrete terms and using examples relevant to them can make it easier to understand. Conversely, if a student struggled with understanding overall concepts if they were only explained concretely, explaining more of the theory behind it (the 'why') could be helpful. For engagement and motivation, the specifics may be very tailored to the individual, but overall, research supports the success of reinforcement strategies like setting goals and providing rewards. That can be as simple as building in breaks after completing a certain amount of work."
