Lessonspace is our online classroom for virtual sessions: shared whiteboard, video, screen share and PDF upload. It's built into Teachworks, so there is no separate sign-up. It's an option, not a requirement — if you and your student are happy on Zoom, Google Meet or another platform, keep using it.

Quick start: open the lesson in your Teachworks calendar and click "Launch Online Lesson Space." That's it.

Starting a Session

  1. 1Open the lesson in your Teachworks calendar. The same link is also in your lesson reminder email.
  2. 2Click "Launch Online Lesson Space." Your student joins from the link in their own reminder email — nothing to send.
  3. 3Allow camera and microphone when your browser asks, then join. Use the lobby to test your mic first.

Tips

  • Laptop + Chrome works best (Edge, Firefox and Safari also work). Phones are fine for joining, not for tutoring.
  • Join 5 minutes early to load worksheets and PDFs. Your board is saved between sessions for each student.
  • Use headphones to avoid echo.
  • Don't forward your link. Each Teachworks link carries the role of the person it was sent to.

To the family, your first session is an audition. Parents decide in that first hour whether we're "the one." One strong hour secures a student you keep all year — so stack the deck every time:

Reach Out to the Parent Before the Session

One short message: "What's the student working on right now? Any recent tests, homework, or teacher comments you can share?" Parents love being asked — it signals you care before you've even started.

Walk In With a Plan, Not Just a Subject

Even 15 minutes of prep changes the whole feel of the session. Know what you'll open with, what you'll work on, and what "win" the student will walk away with.

IXL diagnostics, EdHelper, MathHelp, VA SOL packets, Brave Writer and more are in the Curriculum & Workbooks and State Standards boxes below — go in with one or two resources already in your back pocket for this student's grade and subject.

End With the Parent, Not Just the Student

Two minutes at the door or a quick message after: what you saw, what you'd focus on next. That little recap makes a big difference.

Want help gathering prep material or coordinating with the parent? Message the team — that's literally what we're for. And AI (Claude, ChatGPT, or your favorite) is a phenomenal prep partner: paste in "5th grader, struggling with fractions, gets discouraged easily" and ask for a session plan, warm-up ideas, or three ways to explain a concept.

In most cases, never leave without the next session. A lesson isn't finished until the next one is booked. Most tutoring doesn't end with a decision — it ends with a gap, and one unbooked week quietly becomes three.

“Same day and time next week?” — in person, or in the last minute of the online session. Two seconds while you're standing there beats three days of scheduling texts.

Put It in Teachworks Yourself

Open your calendar, click the day and time, choose the student, and save. You don't need to wait on anyone to do this for you — and the “repeat” option turns it into a standing weekly slot in one click.

Default to a Standing Weekly Slot

Routines survive busy weeks; one-offs don't. A standing slot on the calendar is your hours, held — not hours you have to chase back later.

Say It Out Loud Before You Go

“You're all set for Tuesday at 5.” The student and the parent both hear it, and it's real.

Can't book on the spot? The parent isn't there to confirm, a package is finishing, testing just wrapped, or the family is pausing — that's the “in most cases” part. Coordinate it in the group text you share with the parent and add it to your calendar as soon as they confirm.

Assign Workbooks, Not Just Quizzes

Stop pulling individual questions manually! Workbooks are pre-bundled collections of quizzes. Assign a Workbook, and selectively toggle the visibility of individual quizzes "On" as you assign them for weekly homework.

The "Revenge Test" Protocol

Every mistake a student makes is saved in their Error Log on their profile. Select missed questions directly from the Error Log and click "Create Revenge Test" to instantly generate a targeted quiz addressing those failures.

Utilize Video Scratchpad Replays

If a student gets a math problem wrong, open the question in their portal and watch the Scratchpad Playback. The system records their digital keystrokes so you can watch exactly how they solved it and correct their logic.

Targeted Skill Tests

Notice a student struggling with "Expression of Ideas"? Use the Targeted Skill Test assigner on their profile to instantly generate a 20-question quiz pulling purely from our non-repeating 5,000+ question bank that exclusively targets that weak domain.
