Teaching Philosophy

"I approach every student in a friendly manner, asking questions to understand exactly where a concept is becoming difficult—whether it is the steps, vocabulary, or formula recollection. I believe in steering students toward the right direction with helpful hints and tips rather than doing the work for them, ensuring they gain the independence to actually learn the concept and solve it on their own."

What Makes Mary Special:

  • Extensive Tutoring Center Experience: Served as a Center Manager and Instructor at specialized learning centers, where she managed daily duties, communicated with families regarding student progress, and educated students ages 4 to 13 in Math and English.

  • University-Level Instruction: Taught the Psychology 101 Lab at Marymount University, developing classroom policies and instructing 35 students in basic research methodologies, statistics, and writing.

  • SOL Mastery: She has specific experience leading after-school classes focused on SOL math prep, helping students navigate Virginia state standards with confidence.

  • Strong Foundation in Psychology & Education: Majored in Psychology with extensive coursework in Early Childhood Development, Adolescent Psychology, and Learning and Cognition, giving her deep insight into how students process information. She also spent two years in a Teacher Academy during high school.

  • Holistic & Encouraging Approach: Focuses on identifying the exact root of a student's confusion—such as vocabulary or formula recollection—and guiding them to independent problem-solving through helpful hints rather than doing the work for them.

  • Dynamic Learning Styles: From her time as a Chess Instructor to her work in a Teacher Academy, she is skilled at adjusting her teaching style to fit the specific needs of a group or an individual.
