Meet Christina Ganan-Singh - Expert Math, Calculus, SAT Prep & Science Tutor

Christina Ganan-Singh tutors pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, calculus through Calculus 3, differential equations and statistics, along with SAT prep, chemistry, biology, physics and computer science. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the honors college at Florida International University with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Her professional experience includes work as a Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and as a Biomedical Design Engineer at KLS Martin. Based in Alexandria, Christina tutors in person in students' homes and at local libraries across Alexandria and Shirlington/Arlington, and she works to make each concept relatable to the student.

Areas Of Expertise

  • Pre-Algebra: Pre-algebra is one of the math subjects Christina feels confident and experienced in tutoring, and math is her preferred subject. She makes new ideas relatable by asking about each student's interests.

  • Algebra: Christina tutors algebra and has helped students who had difficulty with algebra concepts, such as why 2x can't be added to or subtracted from 3y. In one case, she used a student's love of video games to help him start seeing letters as their own independent variables.

  • Geometry: Geometry is among the math subjects Christina feels confident and experienced in tutoring. As in every subject, she works to make each concept relatable to the student.

  • Calculus (through Calculus 3): Christina tutors calculus, and Calculus 3 is the highest level of math she tutors. Calculus is one of the math subjects she lists as most confident and experienced in tutoring.

  • Differential Equations: Christina also tutors differential equations, alongside calculus and statistics. She connects new concepts to each student's own interests.

  • Statistics: Christina tutors statistics in addition to her other math subjects. Math is her preferred subject to tutor.

  • SAT Prep: Christina has experience preparing students for the SAT. As in all her tutoring, she makes each concept relatable by connecting it to what the student enjoys.

  • Chemistry: Chemistry is one of the science subjects Christina tutors. She makes each concept relatable by linking it to the student's own interests.

  • Biology: Christina also tutors biology. She asks students about their interests and uses them to make new material easier to grasp.

  • Physics: Physics is among the science subjects Christina tutors. As with math, she works to make each concept relatable to the student.

  • Computer Science: During a gap year in college, Christina tutored math and computer science. She brings the same relatable, interest-based approach to every subject she teaches.

  • Learning Disabilities & ADHD Support: Christina has three years of experience tutoring students with learning disabilities, including ADHD, through the Upward Bound tutoring program at Florida International University. She has worked with kids from all backgrounds.

  • Grade Levels: 6th grade through 12th grade. Comfortable working with middle and high school students.

Teaching Philosophy

"I typically try to make the concept relatable to the student. Some students have difficulty understanding algebra concepts, and I usually ask them about their interests. For example, one student really loved playing video games, and he couldn't understand why 2x couldn't be added to or subtracted from 3y. So I explained: imagine that x represents your video games and y represents oranges. Would you trade your video game with your friend to add to his orange collection? He started grasping the topic and seeing the letters as their own independent variables."

What Makes Christina Special

  • Years of Tutoring Experience: Christina did in-person tutoring after graduating high school, part-time online tutoring through college, and tutored math and computer science during a gap year in college. She has helped students who severely struggled with math go on to earn A's on their final exams.

  • Upward Bound Tutor, Florida International University: Through the Upward Bound tutoring program at FIU, she spent three years working with students with learning disabilities, including ADHD.

  • Patent Examiner, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office: In Alexandria, she has examined biomedical and mechanical technology patent applications for compliance with U.S. patent law. The role involves technical and legal analysis and evaluating whether an invention is patentable.

  • Biomedical Design Engineer, KLS Martin: In Florida, she supported the design and development of patient-specific and standard surgical instruments and cranio-maxillofacial implant systems. She applied engineering principles, CAD and technical specifications to develop and refine plates, guides and related medical-device designs.

  • Summer Camp Counselor & Communication: Christina has worked as a summer camp counselor, and her style with students is interactive and engaging. She is comfortable using text and email to stay in touch.
