Bianca Lucas tutors reading, writing, elementary math, elementary science and social studies for students in kindergarten through 6th grade, and she brings experience with IEPs and 504 plans. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts with minors in Psychology and Educational Studies from Ferrum College and is completing a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction at Western Governors University. At Friendship Public Charter School in Washington, D.C., she has worked as a Kindergarten Teacher, a Reading Interventionist and an MTSS Coordinator, and she tutors students during the school day on her campus. Based in Alexandria, Bianca tutors in person in students' homes and at local libraries across Alexandria and Arlington, starting by finding each student's specific gap and setting a clear goal together.
Areas Of Expertise
Reading: As a Reading Interventionist at Friendship Public Charter School, Bianca delivered Tier 2 and Tier 3 reading interventions using evidence-based strategies across phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. She used diagnostic assessments such as DIBELS and NWEA to identify students' needs and track their growth toward grade-level benchmarks.
Writing: Writing is one of Bianca's preferred subjects to tutor. She sets a clear goal with each student so she can track and monitor their progress.
Elementary Math: Bianca tutors lower-level math, and math is one of her preferred subjects. She connects each concept to the student's personal interests and learning style.
Elementary Science: Bianca also tutors lower-level science. She learns what interests each student by asking them directly, or asking parents for younger students, and uses that to keep lessons engaging.
Social Studies: Social studies is among the subjects Bianca feels confident and experienced in tutoring. She continually refers back to the data to check whether her approach is working and adjusts as needed.
Special Education Support (IEPs & 504 Plans): Bianca has developed and implemented 504 plans so students receive appropriate accommodations, and she has collaborated with multidisciplinary teams at IEP meetings to support goal implementation. She can identify the specific educational gaps a student needs to close.
Grade Levels: Kindergarten through 6th grade. Bianca taught kindergarten for five years at Friendship Public Charter School before moving into reading intervention and MTSS coordination.
Teaching Philosophy
"I start by reviewing the student's data to identify the specific gap, then set a clear goal with them so I can track and monitor their progress. To keep them engaged, I connect the concept to their personal interests and learning style, which I learn by asking the student directly (or parents, for younger scholars). I continually refer back to the data to check if the approach is working and adjust as needed. I also ask the scholar what they need to be successful and engaged."
