Meet Azan Rasul - Expert Math, Calculus, Linear Algebra & Coding Tutor

Azan Rasul tutors math at every level up through university courses, including Calculus III, linear algebra and discrete math, along with coding and computer science and English. He is a Computer Science major at George Mason University, where he has made the Dean's List for two semesters. As a STEM Tutor, he taught K–8 students foundational coding logic, and he is an NSF REU Research Assistant supporting research under Professor ThanhVu Nguyen. Azan tutors in person in students' homes and at local libraries across Fairfax, Arlington and Alexandria, breaking problems into smaller steps and pinpointing exactly where a student's confusion starts.

Areas Of Expertise

  • Mathematics: Math is Azan's preferred subject, and he feels confident and experienced tutoring any math subject up to university level. He breaks each problem into smaller steps and pinpoints exactly where the confusion starts, rather than reteaching the whole topic from scratch.

  • Calculus (through Calculus III): Calculus III is one of the highest-level math courses Azan tutors. He switches up the angle with a quick visual, a real-world analogy or guided questions so students reach understanding on their own.

  • Linear Algebra: Azan tutors linear algebra, one of the highest-level math courses he covers. He keeps sessions low-pressure, so making mistakes feels like just part of figuring it out.

  • Discrete Math: Discrete math is one of the university-level math subjects Azan feels confident tutoring. He uses guided questions to help students work through each step on their own.

  • Coding & Computer Science: Azan has taught K–8 students foundational coding logic using block-based programming languages, guiding them through building and testing interactive games. As a Computer Science major, his coursework includes data structures and algorithms and object-oriented programming, and he programs in languages including Java, Python and JavaScript.

  • English: Azan can also tutor English. As in math, he breaks new material into smaller steps and pinpoints where a student's understanding stops.

  • Grade Levels: Kindergarten through college, plus adult learners. Azan has no grade-level preference, and he has taught coding to students from kindergarten through 8th grade.

Teaching Philosophy

"When a student gets stuck, I break the problem down into smaller steps and pinpoint exactly where the confusion starts rather than reteaching the whole thing from scratch. I'll switch up the angle using a quick visual, a real-world analogy or guided questions so they can reach understanding on their own. To keep them motivated, I make sure it feels like a low-pressure environment where making mistakes is just part of figuring it out."

What Makes Azan Special

  • STEM Tutor: From January to April 2026, Azan instructed K–8 students in foundational coding logic using block-based programming languages and guided them through the software development cycle to build and test interactive games. He cultivated a structured learning environment focused on computational thinking and problem-solving, breaking problems down and checking how each student understood them.

  • NSF REU Research Assistant: Under Professor ThanhVu Nguyen, Azan built an automated course-scheduling platform for George Mason University's Computer Science department and creates data analytics tools for research initiatives. He also built CSPicks, a dashboard that visualizes global computer science research trends.

  • Technical Lead, OSCAR Research Assistant, George Mason University: Azan supports the design and early-stage prototyping of a faculty-facing research and training tool. He organizes and tests its branching scenarios and interactive workflows, and helps with pilot preparation and usability feedback.

  • Creator of MasonPicks: He developed MasonPicks, a course-discovery web application for George Mason University students that brings together 10 years of course offerings, instructor metrics and grade distributions to support academic planning. It has been used by more than 5,000 students.

  • Communication: Azan is comfortable using text and email to stay in touch.
